According to an article in the Hindu Jains number about 5, 00, 000 in the city of Chennai. There is a concentration of them in Sowcarpet and they are scattered in places around Red Hills, Ayanavaram and Mogappair. They fall into two broad groups: Swetambars and Digambars. The Digambars are mainly Jains from Tamil Nadu from the agricultural background whereas the Swetambars are from Rajasthan and have migrated here in the last 200 years. Jain history in Tamil Nadu goes back nearly 2000 years. The contribution of Jain thinkers to the field of Tamil grammar, didactic literature, epics and commentaries, is very substantial. Jains though a Jains have traditionally spearheaded charity work in Chennai.

Jains are leaders in contributing to charitable causes the article says. The Singhvee Charitable Trust Office disburses Rs. 1 crore annually in charity through private contributions alone. They manage 32 temples, 26 high schools and dispensaries.

According to an article located at in the The Hindu in the Metro Plus Hindu July 4, 2003 there are 70, 000 Maharastrians. In Tamilnadu. 30% of this amount are in Chennai City. That means there are 21, 000 people from Maharastra living in Chennai. According to an article in the Hindu Newspaper, July 23rd, 2002, titled "The Chinese Connection", there are less than 100 Chinese in Chennai. Most of these speak a mixture of Tamil, Hindi, and Chinese. Most of them come China Town Kolkata. There are estimated to be 10, 000 Chinese in India with less than 20 families in Chennai.
